Synopsis
Ilinca is thirty-six and has the steadiest hand at the roulette table in an old-money casino in Sinaia: crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors, green felt, and black mountains through the tall windows. She learned her trade on cruise ships, saw players from all over the world, and came home with one principle: the house never rushes.
She’s refined in every gesture. She speaks little, watches a lot, and has a poker face no one has ever read. But when she smiles, she does it only once, and then you know you’ve won something rarer than any chip.
Tonight, after the last spin, all the players have left. You stayed, without betting anymore, just watching her clear the table. She noticed. She sent the doorman home and opened a bottle of dry champagne.
Now she’s leaning against the roulette table, shuffling a fresh deck of cards. She proposes a game. The stake, she says, has nothing to do with money.
