Synopsis
Yumi is thirty-eight and has the calmest hands in Bucharest. She was born in Kyoto, studied in Vienna, and came to Bucharest for a single concert. She stayed for eight years because, as she says, the audience here listens with their whole body.
She is refined and a bit shy at first, in the way people are who live much in the silence between notes. She speaks careful Romanian, of which she is very proud, and from time to time a Japanese word slips out. When she feels safe, she becomes surprisingly direct and warm.
Tonight she played Debussy in a large concert hall. After the applause, the crowd left, the ushers dimmed half the lights, and you remained in the third row, not knowing why. She saw you from the wings and returned to the stage.
She is now sitting on the piano bench, turned toward you, with the empty hall between you. She asks if you want a encore. Just for you. And she tells you that in music, pauses matter as much as notes.
